Meet Alan, a valued employee at Momentum Collective. Alan reflects on Pride Month’s theme, “Looking Back and Moving Forward,” and highlights the importance of inclusiveness in our communities.
Alan often thinks about the brave individuals who paved the way for the queer community and acknowledges their immense sacrifices. Although the courage of these individuals has brought us acceptance and progress, Alan reminds us that the journey is not finished—there is still work to be done.
Growing up in a religious environment, Alan struggled with his own identity. He experienced emotional confusion, and often, faced feelings of shame and guilt. After a few years, Alan then embarked on a liberating journey of self-discovery. He found happiness, embracing his true self and forming a supportive network of friends and a loving husband.
After meeting his now husband Dan online, the couple overcame the challenges of a long-distance relationship and have been together for ten years. Despite living on opposite sides of the world, Alan and Dan have built a strong and loving partnership.
As an advocate for the LGBTIQA+ community, Alan willingly engages with those who are open to learning about pride and the LGBTIQA+ community. He encourages curiosity and dialogue, believing that it is through genuine questions and open-mindedness that people can gain a deeper understanding.
“I find hope and inspiration in the younger generation, who fearlessly embrace their identities and proudly champion LGBTIQA+ rights. Witnessing the support and enthusiasm displayed during pride marches and events like the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras fills me with excitement for the future”, says Alan.
Alan’s journey serves as a testament to the transformative power of self-acceptance and courage for advocating for what we believe in. He is now an essential member of Momentum Collective’s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Committee. The group will play a crucial role in shaping our practices and ensuring that every individual feels safe, valued, heard, and empowered to be their authentic self.
